Dr. Liebelt Performs First Total Knee Replacement with New Robotic-Arm Assisted Application!

Liebelt Knee North Carolina

NORTH CAROLINA SPECIALTY HOSPITAL NOW OFFERING NEWEST TECHNOLOGY IN TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT WITH STRYKER’S MAKO ROBOTIC-ARM ASSISTED TOTAL KNEE APPLICATION

Innovative Robotic Technology Allows Surgeons to Personalize Procedures to Each Patient in North Carolina

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Durham, North Carolina – N.C. Specialty Hospital is one of the first hospitals in the Southeast to offer Stryker’s robotic-arm assisted total knee application for use with its Mako System. This latest advancement in joint replacement surgery transforms the way total knee replacements are performed.

Total knee replacements in the United States are expected to increase 673 percent by 2030,1 yet studies have shown that approximately 30 percent of patients are dissatisfied after conventional surgery.2 Mako Total Knee combines Stryker’s advanced robotic technology with its clinically proven GetAroundKnee (Triathlon Total Knee System), which enabled surgeons to have a more predictable surgical experience with increased accuracy during laboratory testing.3

“Mako is changing the way joint replacement surgeries are performed by providing each patient with a personalized surgical experience based on their specific diagnosis and anatomy,” said Dr. Ralph Liebelt of EmergeOrtho, who performed the first procedure this Spring.  “Using a virtual 3D model, the Mako System allows surgeons to create each patient’s surgical plan pre-operatively before entering the operating room. During surgery, the surgeon can validate that plan and make any necessary adjustments while guiding the robotic-arm to execute that plan. It’s exciting to be able to offer this transformative technology across the joint replacement service line to perform total knee, total hip and partial knee replacements.”

The Mako Total Knee application is a knee replacement treatment option designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis. Through CT-based 3D modeling of bone anatomy, surgeons can use the Mako System to create a personalized surgical plan and identify the implant size, orientation and alignment based on each patient’s unique anatomy. The Mako System also enables surgeons to virtually modify the surgical plan intra-operatively and assists the surgeon in executing bone resections.

“We are proud to be the first hospital in the state to offer this highly advanced robotic technology in our area,” said Randi Shults, Chief Executive Officer of NC Specialty Hospital.  “This addition to our orthopaedic service line further demonstrates our commitment to provide the community with outstanding healthcare.”

It’s Wound Care Awareness Week 2017!

Wound Care (2)

Over 6.7 million people in the United States are living with chronic wounds. Due to the lack of awareness of advanced wound care, the vast majority of these people do not receive the treatment they need and deserve. With this being said, we are excited to announce the fourth annual Wound Care Awareness Week. This week is dedicated to raising awareness of advanced wound care and its benefits to every patient living with chronic non-healing wounds. Through this effort, we will raise awareness of the chronic wound problem and help community physicians identify patients who may benefit from advanced wound care.

The EmergeOrtho Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center is an outpatient clinic based at North Carolina Specialty Hospital. This center has been open since 2013 and provides directed and specialized care for problem wounds that do not respond to a typical treatment plan. These type of injuries might include: Diabetic foot ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, pressure ulcers, non healing flaps and grafts, wounds resulting from past radiation therapy or injury, and persistent wounds associated with bony infection.

The Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center has many comprehensive treatment plans which are unique for each patient to coordinate maximum healing in the smallest amount of time to help the patient return to their normal activities. Some therapies that may help a patient include: improving medical comorbidities and nutritional status, advanced dressing care, aggressive debridement programs, negative pressure wound therapy, arterial revascularization procedures, reversal of venous insufficiency, application of dermal skin substitutes and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

EmergeOrtho at Physician Assistants in Orthopaedic Surgery Conference!

Kuremsky (1)

EmergeOrtho at Physician Assistants in Orthopaedic Surgery Conference!

This weekend Physician Assistants in Orthopaedic Surgery hosted Extremities in the Carolinas, a subspecialty conference for PA’s practicing in Orthopaedics.  Dr. Marshall Kuremsky was invited to speak on two topics, Compressive Neuropathies of the Upper Extremity, and Distal Biceps and Triceps Tears.

The conference took place in Charlotte, NC, the city where Dr. Kuremsky spent his Internship and Orthopaedic Surgery Residency, at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC).  In fact, he was introduced onstage by a Physician Assistant who had worked with him at CMC.  During his residency, at Carolinas Medical Center, Dr. Kuremsky was selected as a Chief Resident in Orthopaedic Surgery.  He went on to become the only orthopaedic surgeon in the state with double Board Certification in Hand Surgery and Sports Medicine, and with this expertise he addressed the group of 250 Physician Assistants on Saturday.

Dr. Kuremsky treats upper extremity injuries in all age groups, with clinical interests including wrist and elbow arthroscopic surgery, elbow replacement, elbow ligament (“Tommy John”) reconstruction, labral and rotator cuff shoulder repair, endoscopic carpal tunnel release, and wrist ligament reconstruction, in the Apex, Brier Creek, and Raleigh locations of EmergeOrtho.

As the official organization for PA’s practicing in orthopedics, Physician Assistants in Orthopaedic Surgery (PAOS) created this conference as an opportunity for surgeons and other experts to speak on the most requested topics in Orthopedics.  Dr. Kuremsky was one of twenty specialists sharing the latest techniques, current literature, and pearls of wisdom for PA’s practicing in orthopedics.

Sam Dyer, PA-C, has been a Physician Assistant with Triangle Orthopaedics, now EmergeOrtho, for almost 20 years, and runs the Orthopaedic Urgent Care in Chapel Hill.  Last year he was elected the President of PAOS, and in his tenure has been working to increase CME opportunities, including video, and building membership of PA’s and student PA’s.

Clifford Daub, PA-C, DC, and Jonathan Prentice, PA-C, also attended the conference.  Cliff specializes in the Spine and sees patients in Durham with Dr. David Musante.  Jonathan works with Dr. Ralph Liebelt seeing Hip, Knee, Spine, and General Orthopaedics patients at the Durham office of EmergeOrtho.

In the Triangle Divison of EmergeOrtho, over fifty Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners care for patients in Orthopaedics, Rehab Medicine, Bariatrics, and Bone Health.  They work closely with the physicians in clinic and in surgery.  The ten Orthopaedic Urgent Cares in the greater Triangle area are staffed by these providers, enabling patients to pay a specialist copay as a more efficient, less costly alternative to the ER.

According to the American Association of Physician Leadership, nationally there are 416 PA’s for every 1,000 Orthopedic Surgeons.  Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners are important providers in EmergeOrtho’s mission to deliver patient-centered care.

EmergeOrtho PA Receives National Recognition

Johns Creek, GA, Jan. 11, 2017 – Krista Kathleen Bartlett, PA-C, who is employed by EmergeOrtho, has been nationally recognized for earning a specialty credential called a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Bartlett was recognized for earning a CAQ in Orthopaedic Surgery, a distinction earned by meeting licensure, education and experience requirements and then passing a national exam in this specialty area. She is one of only four Certified PAs in North Carolina to earn a CAQ in Orthopaedic Surgery since the program’s inception in 2011.

“Certified PAs are prepared and proven providers who contribute real value to the healthcare of this nation,” says Dawn Morton-Rias, Ed.D, PA-C, president and CEO of NCCPA. “They graduate from demanding masters-level programs, pass a rigorous certification exam, and maintain certification at the highest level through continuing medical education programs and retesting throughout their careers. Certified PAs increase access to care for patients in every specialty and clinical setting, including those that are historically underserved.”

CAQs are offered to certified PAs in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, emergency medicine, hospital medicine, orthopaedic surgery, nephrology, pediatrics and psychiatry.

About the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants

The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is the only certifying organization for physician assistants (PAs) in the United States. The PA-C credential is awarded by NCCPA to PAs who fulfill certification, certification maintenance and recertification requirements. There are more than 115,500 certified PAs in the U.S. today. copy-of-copy-of-emergeortho-news-3

JANUARY 3, 2017 – EmergeOrtho is opening a new 30,000 square foot building in Brier Creek this week to provide comprehensive Orthopaedic and Specialty care to Wake County.  Located at 7850 Brier Creek Parkway, the location will offer Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, General Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, Bone Health, Physical and Occupational Therapy, and an after-hours Orthopaedic Urgent Care. The Brier Creek office will be comprised of experienced, board-certified providers who have been treating patients at other Triangle locations of EmergeOrtho, formerly Triangle Orthopaedic Associates.

“We formed EmergeOrtho to preserve the private practice model, a standard of care that puts the patient first.  We are proud to expand our services in Wake County with this new, state-of-the-art facility,” says Dr. Thomas Dimmig, acting president of EmergeOrtho.

The location of the new office furthers EmergeOrtho’s dedication to patient-centered care by further simplifying outpatient surgery.  The Brier Creek clinic is located adjacent to Triangle Orthopaedics Surgery Center, a 10,000 square foot single-specialty surgery center dedicated to Orthopaedics.  Patients scheduled for outpatient procedures will be able to have pre-op appointments, surgery, follow-up care, and physical rehabilitation in one convenient area.

The new office is also near another EmergeOrtho facility, a partnership with D1 Sports, located at 6330 Mount Herman Road providing physical therapy and sports medicine.

EmergeOrtho has 49 office locations in 21 counties from the mountains to the coast of North Carolina.  The name change came in August of 2016 as four physician-owned practices joined  in a common mission of delivering innovative, streamlined, patient-centered care, empowering patients to emerge stronger.

EmergeOrtho Featured in Business NC!

In a special issue about Orthopaedics, Business North Carolina discusses our creation of EmergeOrtho and the advantages of physician-owned practices in delivering care of the highest quality and minimum cost.

“We’re looking to change the whole paradigm of how health care is delivered,” says Dimmig, who is EmergeOrtho’s president. “Initially, we adapted and innovated just to survive, and when we figured out how well that worked, we used it to thrive. This is 100% physician-owned, independent physician owned, driven and led. The physician is the one with the pen who orders the MRI, who orders the surgery, and the one who knows how to take care of patients. We think we should make those decisions rather than the big company who doesn’t have that [patient] contact day to day. The goal is to provide high-quality care at accessible locations. It’s about quality and cost. We at Triangle have been driving that train for so long, but we feel this new organization can do a better job.”

EmergeOrtho Featured in Orthopedics This Week!

emergeortho-news

EmergeOrtho was highlighted in Orthopedics This Week in its efforts to preserve the private practice model by forming a state-wide group.

Orthopedics This Week is the most widely read publication in the Orthopedics industry.  Aimed at clinicians, nurses, administrators, staff, suppliers, manufacturers, scientists, sales people, regulators, investors and consultants,  Orthopedics This Week publishes breaking Orthopaedic news 40 times each year.

The article discusses changes in healthcare industry rules and regulations that threaten the private-practice model, and the collaborative effort to create EmergeOrtho.  As Dr. Dimmig explains in the publication,  “this is all about quality for the patient. Obviously, we want to be independent and successful. But, for us, the end game is to provide a product that is accessible to the patient that has high quality and good outcomes for a cost that is understandable to them. Bringing consumerism back to medicine is important to us.”

And further, “The independent physicians in our system provide care at a lesser cost than hospitals or health systems are able to provide. We do not bill facility fees or HOPD (Hospital Outpatient Department). Therefore, costs of care in the independent world are often lower than if you are going to see a hospital employed physician in general.”
